Backing Manufacturers: The Makers’ Manifesto

Make UK

Manufacturing is central to the UK’s prosperity, directly employing almost three million people and indirectly supporting many more. We’re proud to be the voice of the sector, representing the industry issues that matter most. Ahead of the General Election, our manifesto sets out manufacturing’s priorities for the next Government.
We’re calling for the risk of a no-deal Brexit to be eliminated and for a clear focus on 15 other policy priorities. From urgent changes to the apprenticeship levy, to business rate reform, all paving the way for a smart manufacturing future.

We find ourselves in extraordinary political and economic times.

Manufacturers are at the forefront of industry, accounting for almost half of all exports. We employ almost three million people, in high quality jobs that pay around 13% more than the national average. So we play a central role as the country decides its future.

Since the UK chose to leave the EU business has faced three years of challenge and uncertainty. Our message has been consistent throughout this period. We have worked in partnership with those in Westminster and Whitehall to ensure an outcome that delivers against four keys tests:
•frictionless trade
•regulatory alignment
•access to skilled labour; and
•a lengthy transition period that allows business time to adapt to change

We have achieved a huge amount in many policy areas in recent years, from visa reforms for graduates, to driving changes to tax credits to make life easier for smaller businesses as well as securing commitments from the Treasury for changes to corporation taxes.

Our ambition for the manufacturing sector could not be greater. This manifesto outlines our members’ priorities and provides real solutions that we stand ready to work with Government to implement. We want to see an effective industrial strategy providing a framework for a smart future, a dynamic workforce, world class infrastructure and regulatory reform that enables us all to thrive.

Make UK has an integrated and comprehensive package of measures designed to give manufacturers a platform for success. It is accompanied by an offer to work in partnership to deliver.
